Who is Jesus?

For over 2,000 years, the identity of Jesus has captivated, divided, and challenged people across the globe. Some call him a great teacher, others a prophet in the tradition of the Old Testament, and still others see Him as no more than a historical figure who left his mark on his time. Yet reducing Jesus to any of these categories overlooks both the true depth of his power and the enduring impact of his message. Scripture tells us plainly: Jesus is God made man—revealing his love for us and carrying out his plan of salvation.

A perfect reflection of God

Jesus is the fullest expression of how God makes himself known. The writer of Hebrews puts it this way: “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he also made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being” (Hebrews 1:1–3). If we want to know who God is, we need only look at Jesus.

God’s only Son, sent to save us

The word gospel literally means “good news.” But good news only makes sense when we first understand the bad news: humanity has wandered from God because of sin and now needs to be rescued. Jesus came to reconcile us with our Creator and open a way to eternal life. That is why the Gospel is truly good news—God Himself gave us a Saviour. As John writes, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16).

Love revealed in the cross and resurrection

Jesus revealed God’s love by dying on the cross and rising again three days later. Centuries before, the prophet Isaiah had foretold it: “He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed” (Isaiah 53:5). But the cross was not the end of the story! Jesus conquered death and rose to life, offering all who believe in Him a living hope—forgiveness of sins and the promise of eternal life with God.

A teacher and guide for our lives

Beyond his work of salvation, Jesus shows us how to live according to the heart of God. His teachings on love, compassion, forgiveness, and justice are not merely moral guidelines—they reveal God’s very character. His disciples were transformed by the way he loved and served, and that testimony has echoed through the centuries. Across every culture and generation, millions have found in Jesus the true source of life.

One day, Jesus asked his disciples: But what about you? Who do you say I am? (Matthew 16:15). Simon Peter answered powerfully: You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God (Matthew 16:16). This exchange reveals the deeply personal nature of our faith. Jesus’ question was not relevant only for his disciples long ago—it continues to speak into our lives today.

The way, the truth, and the life

“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Jesus calls everyone, without distinction, to come to Him and be reconciled with God.

Being a Christian is not just about believing certain doctrines, doing good deeds, or following traditions. It begins with recognizing our sinful state, believing that Jesus died on the cross in our place and rose again. Through him, we receive the hope of new and eternal life, along with the promise of a living relationship with Jesus.

Conclusion: An invitation

So, who is Jesus? He is the one and only Son of God, who came to reveal the Father’s love, offer forgiveness, conquer death, and lead us to eternal life. He is both Lord and Saviour, Father and Master. The most important question, then, is not simply “Who is Jesus?” but “Who is Jesus to me?” Each of us is invited to respond to that call personally.
