With today\u2019s release of the major motion picture \u201c<a style=\"transition: color 0.3s ease-in-out, background-color 0.3s ease-in-out, border-color 0.3s ease-in-out, opacity 0.3s ease-in-out, visibility 0.3s ease-in-out, box-shadow 0.3s ease-in-out; cursor: pointer;\" href=\"https:\/\/samsonmovie.pureflix.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Samson<\/a>,\u201d we wanted to take some time and refresh you on some of the aspects of Sampson\u2019s story your Sunday school teacher likely left out.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-28bb492 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"28bb492\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-5903ca2\" data-id=\"5903ca2\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5ce3665 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5ce3665\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">1. Samson's father had major doubt issues<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9102b72 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"9102b72\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">In Judges 13, we read of the angel of the Lord who came and visited Samson\u2019s mother, informing her that she would bear a son, despite her barren womb. The angel went on to give her specific instructions for how to raise her son as a Nazirite. Her husband had such a hard time hearing this news from her that he prayed to God and asked Him to send the angel\u00a0<em>again<\/em>\u00a0so he could hear these instructions for himself.<\/p><p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">God\u00a0actually did send the angel again and after the angel refused to eat any food they offered, Samson\u2019s parents offered a burnt offering to the Lord\u2014as an alternative to preparing a meal for the angel. After the angel left them by ascending into heaven in the rising flames, Samson\u2019s father thought they had seen God and were therefore \u201cdoomed to die.\u201d His wife had to talk some sense back into him, saying\u00a0\u201cIf the Lord had meant to kill us, he would not have accepted a burnt offering and grain offering from our hands, nor shown us all these things or now told us this.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-831d8c9 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"831d8c9\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-bb5b875\" data-id=\"bb5b875\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8046d97 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8046d97\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">2. God actually condoned Samson's first marriage to a Philistine woman<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-50b280d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"50b280d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>In Judges 14, Samson declares his desire to take a young Philistine\u00a0girl\u00a0as his wife. Despite his parents urging him to reconsider and marry within his own people, he insisted on marrying this Philistine. The Bible\u00a0actually goes\u00a0on to say that \u201cHis parents did not know that this was from the Lord, who was seeking an occasion to confront the Philistines; for at that time they were ruling over Israel.\u201d<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-e09a5e6 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"e09a5e6\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-1e6e875\" data-id=\"1e6e875\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-af95c8a elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"af95c8a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">3. Samson took riddles way too seriously<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-39d80b1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"39d80b1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">We\u2019ve all told riddles to people who didn\u2019t understand them. Normally, when asked to explain the riddle, most people will eventually just do it. No big deal, right? Well, not Samson. He took his riddles\u00a0<em>very<\/em>\u00a0seriously. Take this example.\u00a0One day, on his way to visit the girl he was courting, he\u00a0was\u00a0approached by\u00a0a roaring lion. God allowed him to easily kill this lion, which he tossed aside and went on his merry way. However, when he was making this journey again, this time on his way to marry the Philistine girl, he noticed the dead lion\u2019s carcass filled with beehives and honey. A normal person would have kept walking at this point, but not Samson. He took a bunch of honey, ate some, and gave some to his parents.<\/p><p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">At the customary feast with the Philistines later that evening, he proposed a riddle-based bet with them:\u00a0\u201cIf you can give me the answer within the seven days of the feast, I will give you thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes. If you can\u2019t tell me the answer, you must give me thirty linen garments and thirty sets of clothes.\u201d<\/p><p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">They agreed and Samson went on: \u201cOut of the eater, something to eat; out of the strong, something sweet.\u201d His new bride\u2019s friends, after being unsuccessful in deciphering Samson\u2019s riddle for several days, approached her and asked her to get the answer from Samson. After begging him for seven days (yes, six days, 23 hours, and 59 minutes longer than most of us would withhold the answer to a riddle), he finally told her, and she in turn, told her Philistine friends. When Samson learned this, he went and \u201cstruck down\u201d (which we can assume means killed) 30 Philistines, stripped them, and gave their clothes to those who had explained the riddle. So he didn\u2019t even strike down the people who cheated to learn the answer to his riddle, he struck down 30 OTHER Philistines and actually honored the bet. Even more interesting to consider, the Bible says that \u201cthe Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him\u201d as he went down to strike down these people. It would appear that even though Samson was killing them for seemingly trivial reasons, God gave him the strength to do it.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-41199da elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"41199da\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-8ccba3e\" data-id=\"8ccba3e\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-282b53c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"282b53c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">4. Samson took wedding drama to a whole new level<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b3a21c2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b3a21c2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">To make the wedding riddle story even crazier, after all of this was said and done, the Bible\u00a0says\u00a0\u201cSamson\u2019s wife was given\u00a0[by her father]\u00a0to one of his companions who had attended him at the feast.\u201d\u00a0When Samson went to visit his wife (apparently,\u00a0he remained in Israel and she remained\u00a0with the Philistine\u2019s even after their wedding), her father informed him that he had given her in marriage to somebody else because he assumed Samson hated her by now (see Judges 15:2).<\/p><p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">Her father then tries to convince Samson to take her younger sister instead. He even throws Samson\u2019s original wife under the bus by saying her sister is more attractive anyway. \u201cIsn\u2019t her younger sister more attractive? Take her instead.\u201d<\/p><p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">Samson gets so mad at this point that he goes out and catches 300 (yes, 300) foxes and ties their tails together in pairs, secures burning torches to their tails, and sets them free to run for their lives in the Philistine\u2019s fields. They took down everything in their path, including vineyards and olive groves. It\u2019s interesting to note that, unlike in earlier moments of extreme behavior in Samson\u2019s life, nowhere in scripture does it say that the Spirit of God came upon Samson during this time. He did this completely out of his own power and free will.<\/p><p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">Not to be outdone, when the Philistines learned that Samson was responsible for their burnt fields, they went and burned his father-in-law and his wife to death.<\/p><p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">It\u2019s no surprise that the same person who killed 30 people for cheating to answer a riddle wouldn\u2019t take very well to his wife being killed. Samson vowed at this point, \u201cSince you\u2019ve acted like this, I swear I won\u2019t stop until I get my revenge.\u201d<\/p><p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">Samson then slaughtered many of them. Remember, all this stemmed from wedding drama. Basically, you won\u2019t like Samson when he\u2019s angry.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-640777f elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"640777f\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-24cd63e\" data-id=\"24cd63e\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ff99137 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ff99137\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">5. Judah betrayed Samson<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a27df8f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a27df8f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">Everybody remembers Delilah and how she betrayed Samson, but did you realize that it was Samson\u2019s own people who first betrayed him? And after only a brief conversation they had with the Philistines at that.<\/p><p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">After the\u00a0wedding drama, you could say that tensions were\u00a0pretty high\u00a0between Judah and Philistia. Think the\u00a0Montagues and Capulets\u00a0times a thousand.\u00a0So, it shouldn\u2019t come as a surprise that neither group of people were too supportive of Samson\u00a0at this point in time.<\/p><p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">After the Philistines confronted the armies of Judah because of Samson (Judges 15:9), the people of Judah decided to give in to their demands and hand over Samson. Three thousand of the men from Judah went and politely asked Samson if they could capture him and turn him over to the Philistines. Instead of resisting the idea, Samson was ok with it under one condition\u2014that they wouldn\u2019t kill him themselves.\u00a0After they agreed, he let them tie him up and they delivered him to the Philistines.<\/p><p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">So essentially, Samson was the original \u201cTrojan Horse\u201d and the men inside it \u2013 all as one person. He ripped through the ropes, grabbed the jaw bone of a donkey, and slaughtered a thousand Philistines. One. Thousand. Philistines.<\/p><p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">Keep in mind, the men of Judah who delivered Samson to the Philistines weren\u2019t in on this. They thought they were really turning him over\u00a0to his execution.\u00a0They probably didn\u2019t expect him to be back home in time for dinner.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-c288ad3 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"c288ad3\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-68a5dc1\" data-id=\"68a5dc1\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd6bc6e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"dd6bc6e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">6. Between his tragic marriage and his time with Delilah, Samson went to a prostitute<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-abfd683 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"abfd683\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>We all remember how at one point in Samson\u2019s story, he tore the doors off the gate of the city of Gaza, but did you know why he was in Gaza in the first place? According to Judges 16:1, the Bible just says that he went there, but whatever his initial intentions were, he ended up seeing a prostitute instead. You don\u2019t really hear about that part of the story, but usually skip right to the next part of his story. After the Gazites realized he was there, they planned to kill him at daybreak. Instead, Samson \u201ctook hold of the doors of the city gate, together with the two posts, and tore them loose, bar and all. He lifted them to his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron\u201d (see Judges 16).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-28029eb elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"28029eb\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-ceefda9\" data-id=\"ceefda9\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cb2bf25 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"cb2bf25\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">7. Samson's patience with riddles didn't carry over to more important secrets<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6d1978d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"6d1978d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">The Bible says that when Samson started seeing a Philistine woman named Delilah, the Philistines convinced her to try to get him to reveal the secret to his incredible strength. We all know this part of the story. He tells her fake reasons over and over, and over and over she tells the Philistines, who proceed to try to overtake him each time using their newly discovered information.<\/p><p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">According to Judges 16:16, Delilah prodded Samson with nagging \u201cday after day until he was sick to death of it.\u201d The Bible doesn\u2019t say how long \u201cday after day\u201d was, but if you remember from earlier in the story, Samson was able to withhold the answer to a silly riddle for an entire week. While we don\u2019t know exactly how long he was able to keep this secret from Delilah, \u201cday after day\u201d seems a little short for a life and death matter such as his strength. \u201cMonth after month\u201d or even \u201cyear after year\u201d might have been more understandable.<\/p><p style=\"margin-right: 0px; margin-left: 0px;\">Sadly, he eventually gave in, Delilah had his head shaved, and the Philistines captured him. In the end, God gives him his strength back one last time, allowing Samson to topple a large Philistine temple onto three thousand Philistines, a feat that took the life of Samson himself.
